According to the 2001 Indian
census, Rajgir has a literacy rate of 52% which is lower
than the national average of 59.5%. The female literacy rate
is especially low at 41%. Modern Bihar has developing
economy coupled with an inadequate educational
infrastructure, creating a huge mismatch between the demand
for and supply of education. This problem is further
aggravated by the growing expectations of the people and a
multifold increase in population.
Veerayatan determined that the best way to overcome these
challenges and provide hope for the people of Bihar was to
create a place that offered world class education. With the
support of JAINA-USA, Veerayatan took established a school,
the Tirthankar Mahaveer Vidya Mandir, in the village of
Licchuwad in the year 2001, the auspicious 2600th
anniversary of Tirthankar Mahavir’s Jayanti. For the past
several generations, no formal educational system had
existed in this community. Now, more than 300 students
attend the school and actively participate in its
activities. English and Hindi-medium education is provided,
with a healthy mix of sports, vocational training, computer
education and arts. The school has a Library, Computer
Centre, Sewing Centre, Playgrounds, Medical facility and a
school bus. The school has proven to be a fountainhead of
inspiration to many, inculcating high moral values along
with formal academic education based on a CBSE curriculum.
